Meet The Immigrant: Do Won Chang the Entrepreneur Who Built a Global Fashion Phenomenon

20 May 2026

Do Won Chang’s journey from South Korea to the United States is a powerful story of sacrifice, determination, and entrepreneurial vision. Born and raised in South Korea, Chang immigrated to the United States in pursuit of greater opportunity and a better future for his family. Like many immigrants arriving in a new country, he faced uncertainty and financial hardship during his early years. To support himself and his family, Chang worked multiple jobs, including as a janitor, gas station attendant, and coffee shop employee. These experiences exposed him to the realities of working class immigrant life while strengthening his resolve to build something of his own.

While working long hours, Chang became fascinated by the retail industry, particularly clothing stores that seemed to generate significant customer traffic and revenue. He observed how fashion influenced culture and consumer behavior, and he began to envision creating a business that combined accessibility, trend awareness, and affordability. Alongside his wife, Jin Sook Chang, he decided to take a major risk by opening a small clothing store in Los Angeles in 1984.

That store became Forever 21, a fast fashion brand that would eventually grow into a global retail empire. The concept was simple but effective: offer stylish, trend driven clothing at prices young consumers could afford. By quickly adapting runway inspired styles for the mass market, Forever 21 became one of the most recognizable names in fashion retail. Its black and yellow logo appeared in shopping malls and commercial districts across the world, symbolizing accessible fashion for a new generation.

Chang’s immigrant perspective played a major role in the company’s growth. He understood the value of hard work, efficiency, and staying closely connected to customer demand. Rather than following traditional retail timelines, Forever 21 moved rapidly, constantly refreshing inventory to match emerging trends. This speed and adaptability helped the company compete against much larger and more established fashion brands.

Despite the company’s later financial challenges and restructuring, Do Won Chang’s impact on the retail industry remains significant. He helped redefine fast fashion in the United States and demonstrated how immigrant entrepreneurs can transform industries by recognizing overlooked market opportunities. His story also reflects the risks that come with rapid growth and the constantly evolving nature of global consumer culture.

Beyond business success, Chang’s journey resonates because it reflects a familiar immigrant narrative of resilience and reinvention. He arrived in a new country with limited resources but used observation, persistence, and bold decision making to create a globally recognized brand. His experience highlights how immigrants often bring fresh perspectives that allow them to see possibilities others overlook.

Today, Do Won Chang stands as an example of immigrant entrepreneurship at a global scale. From working multiple minimum wage jobs to building one of the most recognizable fashion retailers in the world, his story demonstrates how determination and vision can turn humble beginnings into lasting influence across industries and cultures.
