Meet The Immigrant: Dr. Kala Fleming, the Engineer Building Pathways into the Green Economy

21 Oct 2026

Dr. Kala Fleming is a Caribbean born engineer, innovator, and entrepreneur working at the intersection of technology, environmental sustainability, and workforce development. Raised in a family of technicians and construction workers, she developed a professional background that combines engineering expertise with an interest in solving practical challenges. Her academic and professional journey eventually took her into the technology industry in the United States, where she worked with major technology companies before establishing her own venture. Her work today focuses on connecting people to employment opportunities created by the transition to a more sustainable economy.

Fleming pursued advanced education in engineering, earning a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison. Her academic background provided a foundation for work involving infrastructure, environmental challenges, and technological innovation. She has also contributed to scientific and technical research, with Rally, a social enterprise accelerator, reporting that she has published more than 30 peer reviewed papers and holds 10 patents. These accomplishments reflect her experience applying technical knowledge to problems that extend beyond the laboratory and into communities and industries.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Fleming worked in technology and corporate strategy, including roles at IBM. According to Rally, her work involved helping clients establish market positions through emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain. This experience exposed her to the ways technology can influence business decisions and create new opportunities. It also gave her insight into how technological innovation can be connected to broader economic and social challenges.

Fleming eventually founded Frontline Gig, a venture designed to address workforce challenges in the green economy. The company focuses on helping employers and communities connect local talent with work opportunities linked to environmental sustainability, infrastructure, and green jobs. The venture emerged from a practical challenge: clean energy and green infrastructure projects require workers, yet people seeking employment do not always have straightforward pathways from training into paid work. Frontline Gig aims to help bridge that gap by connecting people with opportunities to gain experience and develop relevant skills.

Frontline Gig's approach recognizes that traditional recruitment processes can overlook people whose potential is not adequately represented by conventional qualifications or employment histories. Through partnerships with community organizations, workforce programmes, and employers, the platform helps identify people interested in available work and connects them with relevant opportunities. Its current website describes a model that links training, short term gigs, hands on experience, and longer term career development. The aim is to help people build practical experience while supporting employers who need workers for local projects.

The venture's work is particularly relevant to the growth of green infrastructure and climate resilience initiatives. Projects involving clean energy, environmental improvements, and community infrastructure require people who can perform practical tasks as well as workers with specialized technical skills. Frontline Gig seeks to create more accessible entry points into this employment landscape, including opportunities for people who may be underemployed or exploring a new career direction. By connecting local talent with project needs, the company aims to make workforce development more responsive to the communities where projects take place.

Fleming's work has also received support and recognition from entrepreneurship and innovation programmes. She was featured in Halcyon's 2025 Future Builders Fellowship, which highlights founders working on solutions to social and economic challenges. Rally has also profiled Frontline Gig as a venture focused on education, talent, and workforce pathways. These platforms have highlighted Fleming's combination of engineering knowledge and workforce strategy as central to the company's mission.

Her professional experience extends across several countries. Rally reports that Fleming has lived and worked in the United States, the Caribbean, Kenya, Ghana, and the Philippines. This international experience has accompanied her work in engineering, innovation, and development. She has also delivered a TED Talk on creating digital groundwater aquifers and advised governments on innovation and workforce strategy. These activities demonstrate the breadth of her work across technical research, public policy, and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Kala Fleming's journey brings together engineering, technology, and the practical question of who benefits from economic change. Through Frontline Gig, she is working to connect people with opportunities created by the green economy while helping employers address workforce needs. Her career demonstrates how technical expertise can be applied not only to develop new technologies, but also to improve the systems that connect people, skills, and employment. As investment in climate and infrastructure projects continues, her work focuses on ensuring that local communities have clearer pathways to participate in the opportunities those investments create.
