Meet The Immigrant: Jyoti Bansal, the Technology Entrepreneur Building the Future of Software Delivery

09 Sept 2026

Jyoti Bansal is an Indian born technology entrepreneur whose career has taken him from a small town in Rajasthan to the heart of Silicon Valley. He grew up in Rajasthan, where his father operated a farming machinery business. Bansal helped his father with the business while growing up, gaining early exposure to how a company operated. He later studied computer science at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, earning a bachelor's degree in the field. After graduating, he moved to the United States at the age of 21 and began working as a software engineer and architect at several Silicon Valley startups.

Bansal's early years in the United States were shaped by the immigration system. According to Forbes, he initially worked in the country on an H1-B visa and spent seven years working at startups before obtaining his green card. His immigration status restricted his ability to immediately start his own company. After becoming a permanent resident, he was able to pursue the entrepreneurial path he had been considering. This experience later became an important part of his public perspective on immigration and access to global technology talent.

In 2008, Bansal founded AppDynamics, a software company focused on helping organizations monitor application performance and identify problems within complex software systems. The company developed technology that gave engineering teams visibility into how applications were performing and helped them diagnose issues. Bansal served as its founder and CEO during much of the company's growth. AppDynamics expanded significantly and was ultimately acquired by Cisco for approximately $3.7 billion in 2017. The acquisition was completed shortly after the company had been preparing for an initial public offering.

The sale of AppDynamics could have marked the end of Bansal's entrepreneurial journey, but it instead became the beginning of another chapter. In 2017, he launched BIG Labs, a startup studio designed to develop new technology companies. One of the first companies to emerge from that effort was Harness, which Bansal co founded with Rishi Singh. Harness was created to address challenges involved in delivering software quickly and reliably, particularly the work that takes place after software has been written. Bansal became and remains the company's CEO.

Harness has since developed into a major software company with a broader focus on software delivery, security, testing, deployment and governance. In December 2025, Harness announced a $240 million financing round that valued the company at $5.5 billion. Forbes reported that the financing made Bansal a billionaire based on his ownership of Harness and the proceeds associated with the earlier sale of AppDynamics. Harness continues to position its technology around automating work that happens after software code is created, increasingly using artificial intelligence to support software development and delivery processes.

Bansal has also built companies and investment organizations beyond AppDynamics and Harness. In 2018, he co founded Traceable, an application security company focused on protecting APIs and modern applications. That same year, he co founded Unusual Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on early stage technology companies. Harness and Traceable later merged in 2025, bringing software delivery and application security capabilities together under the Harness organization. Unusual Ventures states that its third fund closed in 2022 and that the firm has more than $1 billion under management.

Bansal's work has also been recognized through industry awards and professional distinctions. Harness states that he has received multiple leadership awards, including recognition from Forbes, the San Francisco Business Times and Ernst & Young. He is also listed as the lead inventor on more than 20 U.S. patents. His career combines engineering, entrepreneurship and investment, with his work spanning application performance, software delivery, cybersecurity and venture capital.

Today, Jyoti Bansal remains the co founder and CEO of Harness, where his focus has increasingly turned toward the role of artificial intelligence in software delivery. Harness describes its current direction as using AI agents to automate activities that follow the creation of software, including testing, security, deployment and governance. In 2026, the company launched additional AI capabilities designed to allow software delivery agents to operate within governed enterprise environments.

Bansal's story represents one of the ways immigrant talent has contributed to the technology industry in the United States. He arrived from India as a young engineer, spent years working within the constraints of an H1-B visa, and eventually built companies that reached multibillion dollar valuations. From AppDynamics to Harness, his career has remained centered on solving complex problems through technology. His journey illustrates how technical expertise, entrepreneurship and access to opportunity can combine to create companies with significant influence in the global technology industry.
