Meet The Immigrant: Maijid Moujaled, the Ghanaian Technology Entrepreneur Connecting Africa Through Fintech

23 Sept 2026

Maijid Moujaled is a Ghanaian technology entrepreneur and the co founder and President of Chipper Cash, a financial technology company focused on payments and financial services. Moujaled grew up in Accra, Ghana, and later moved to the United States for his education. He attended Grinnell College in Iowa, where he studied computer science and graduated with honors in 2014. His experience as an international student in the United States became part of a journey that eventually connected his technology background with financial challenges across Africa.

Moujaled's interest in technology developed while he was at Grinnell. He became involved in Grinnell AppDev, a student led application development group that he helped establish. The group was created to give students opportunities to learn mobile application development and build useful applications for the college community. One of the projects associated with the group was G Licious, an application that provided information about the college's dining hall menus. Moujaled also worked at Grinnell's technology help desk, an experience that contributed to his decision to pursue software development rather than his original plan of becoming a doctor.

During his time at Grinnell, Moujaled met Ham Serunjogi, a Ugandan student studying economics. The two became involved in technology projects and developed an interest in using technology to address problems affecting people in Africa. In 2014, Moujaled and Serunjogi also worked with another Grinnell student on Voyse, an application designed to allow users to send encrypted voice recordings that would disappear after being played. Their work reflected Moujaled's early interest in building mobile products and experimenting with technology beyond the classroom.

After graduating from Grinnell, Moujaled entered the technology industry. Grinnell records show that he began working as an iOS software engineer on Yahoo's mobile team in 2014, where he worked on products including Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Sports. He later worked with Imgur. Grinnell also reported that he eventually left the United States because of visa issues before returning in 2018. His professional experience gave him additional exposure to software engineering and consumer technology before he committed himself fully to entrepreneurship.

The idea that eventually became Chipper Cash developed through conversations between Moujaled and Serunjogi about financial transactions in Africa. During a 2016 road trip, the two discussed ways technology could be used to address problems involving payments and financial connectivity across the continent. Their experience growing up in Africa and subsequently studying in the United States gave them perspectives from both environments. They eventually decided to build a financial technology company focused on making payments between African countries easier.

In 2018, Moujaled and Serunjogi launched Chipper Cash. The platform initially enabled users to send money across borders between African countries and between different mobile money services. The company was designed around the use of mobile technology to make financial transactions more accessible. Chipper Cash subsequently expanded its services beyond peer to peer transfers to include payment solutions for businesses and merchants, as well as other financial products.

Moujaled has played a central role in the company's technology and product development. Chipper Cash's current leadership page identifies him as co founder and President, with responsibility for the Product, Engineering, Marketing and People teams. The company says he has a particular interest in developing consumer and enterprise financial products that have an impact across Africa. His background in computer science and previous work on consumer applications provided a technical foundation for his role in building Chipper's products.

Chipper Cash attracted significant investment as its operations expanded. In 2021, the company raised funding that valued it at approximately $2.2 billion, according to Forbes. By 2022, Forbes reported that the company had more than five million registered users and had raised approximately $300 million from investors including Ribbit Capital, FTX and Bezos Expeditions. Chipper's services at the time included cross border money transfers, bill payments, cryptocurrency trading and the ability for users to purchase U.S. stocks.

The company's growth has also involved significant changes as the fintech industry experienced a broader shift in investment conditions. Forbes reported in 2023 that Chipper Cash had undertaken layoffs and reduced its valuation following the downturn in technology and venture capital markets. The company subsequently focused more heavily on controlling costs and moving toward profitability. These developments form part of the documented business history of Chipper Cash and demonstrate that Moujaled's entrepreneurial journey has included both periods of rapid expansion and periods of significant adjustment.

Beyond Chipper Cash, Moujaled has remained connected to entrepreneurship and technology education. He and Serunjogi have supported Pioneer Weekend, an innovation and pitch competition associated with Grinnell College. Grinnell has also recognized Moujaled as one of its notable alumni and identifies him as the co founder of Chipper Cash. Through his career, he has remained connected to the intersection of software engineering, entrepreneurship and financial technology.

Maijid Moujaled's journey from Accra to the United States and from computer science student to fintech entrepreneur illustrates how international education and technology experience can shape a business focused on challenges in an entrepreneur's home region. His career moved from building mobile applications as a student to engineering products at major technology companies and eventually to co founding Chipper Cash with Ham Serunjogi. Today, Moujaled continues to serve as Chipper Cash's co founder and President, working across product, engineering, marketing and people as the company develops financial technology for consumers and businesses.
