The Resilient Interview

Marzil Rutenberg: From $50 and Faith to Building a Healthcare and Legacy Empire.

08 Dec 2025

When Marzil Rutenberg stepped off the plane in the United States on December 2nd, 2010, she carried just $50 in her pocket, no family, no network, and no safety net. What she did carry would prove far more valuable: an unshakeable faith in God and a fierce determination to transform adversity into impact.

Today, Marzil stands as a healthcare entrepreneur, PhD holder in Organizational Development and Leadership, and the driving force behind ventures revolutionizing how we think about care, resilience, and legacy-building.

Arriving from the southern island of Mindanao in the Philippines as an international student, Marzil faced what she describes as "the most challenging experience of my life." The cultural shock went beyond language barriers, it was a complete re-evaluation of identity, constantly navigating an entirely new business landscape and community leadership expectations.

"I overcame these hardships by embracing each obstacle as an opportunity to grow, relentlessly pursuing education and certifications, and building relationships through genuine service and integrity," Marzil explains. Those uncertain beginnings transformed adversity into the foundation for her leadership in healthcare and nonprofit work.

Marzil's journey spans over two decades of expertise in organizational development, risk management, and strategic operations. After earning her PhD and working as a global project executive for major organizations, she felt called to create something that would make a direct, lasting impact. This vision crystallized into three transformational ventures:

Empower Care Plus Solutions, where Marzil serves as President and Founder, delivers personalized, holistic care for seniors and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a manifestation of her belief in nurturing whole lives.

The Legacy Engine, which she co-founded, provides affordable access to legacy-building expertise and leadership development. The platform's crown jewel is The Legacy Engine Scholars program in the Philippines, helping talented students access life-changing educational opportunities, the same kind that transformed Marzil's trajectory.
